Astronomy with a 60 mm refractor

Three 60mm refractor models

Ganymede 60/800

It is the "traditional" 60mm refractor. In general, focal distances varies from 700 mm to 900 mm.
The opposite picture shows the 305 L model. It was delivered with a wood trunk, so it's easy to carry. This refractor was bought in 1985 and is still being used. Sun, moon, planets and deep sky drawings on this site were made with this instrument.
In France, an example of a good quality/price ratio in this range was the Ganymede Starium 680 L (approximately 300 Euros), which had the advantage of having a "true" finderscope (6x30). Other current 60mm refractors are used with 1/4" eyepieces, providing a wider range of magnification.

Luciano Pignoloni repaired two 60mm reflectors bought (at a very low price !) in a supermarket : opposite is the result ; you can see here images with a ToUCam Pro webcam.

Astromaster 70/350

It is a 70 mm refractor with an internal diaphragm which limits the aperture to 60mm. It was found for less than 150 Euros in France. More recent, it belongs to the compact instruments family. In addition to be carried very easily, it is interesting for wide Deep-Sky objects (North America Nebula, for example). On the other hand, a 60mm refractor like Ganymede is better for planets.
The deep-sky drawings below are made by Laurent Ferrero with this instrument.
